Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Join us as this blog is about stopping to see the real beauty around us...to touch and feel it... "Through the Lens".

Questions About My Camera Type

                                    DSC_3957

I have had several people ask the type of camera I am using, so I thought I would do a blog on my camera. Before I go any further, I enjoy and have a passion for taking nature photographs. I am learning and having fun learning about photography. I still have so much to learn, but also am having so much fun with it. It has become my hobby. The best thing about it, you no longer have to pay to have your film developed, so it makes learning easier and less costly.

I purchased a Nikon D60 SLR with the basic 18-55 mm lens. I also purchased the 55-200 zoom lens that I use 90% of the time. I ordered a special lens that I use when I am in a stationary mode and it is a 100-500 zoom lens. This lens is a must for a tripod to steady the camera. When the item or the scene is too far away, this lens brings it in much closer. So when out in nature and you can’t get close to an animal, the lens is a great help in bringing it closer.

I am lucky in my photography because I am just learning and many times I take a multitude of pics just to get one or two good ones. The camera does most of the work, and all I do is click the shutter button.

My advice is to get a good SLR and a couple good lenses and go out there and have fun. Try different settings on the camera, but document the picture with the different settings you use. That will tell you what setting brings the result you are looking for.

If I can learn some things about photography, anyone can. Go out, play and enjoy your camera.   There are many other bloggers out there who know a lot more than me about photography, so gather as many tips as possible and enjoy!

Make your vision come alive in your pictures.

Thanks for all the positive comments you have given my pics, you are very kind with your words.  Again, for me, it’s just plain old fun.

An Afternoon at the Beach and a Hint of Fall in the Air

                                 DSC_3964

We had a chip in our windshield, so we had a company come out  and do their magic.  When they left, the chip was gone.  DSC_3927

There’s not been a lot going on so we haven’t blogged for a while, but we had a special day at Callaway Gardens today.

This afternoon Gerri & I went to the Beach at Callaway Gardens. No, it’s not an ocean, it’s the world's largest manmade, white sand beach and it covers a mile around the 65 acre Robin Lake. The lake is closed to swimming now, so we had the beach and the area to ourselves. Almost like it was our own private resort. We sat under our private canopy on the beach... even our own bench.

Wow, what pampering. There was a great breeze and we sensed a bit of fall in the air. Afterwards we walked through our private vegetable garden, although we let four or five other people come through the garden too. This is such a beautiful and peaceful resort. It has several thousand acres of nature, hiking and biking trails, and lakes for fishing, Sibley Horticulture Center, a Chapel on the lake, 2 beautiful golf courses and so much more in a natural setting.

If you are ever in this part of the country and you love nature, you would greatly enjoy a day or two at Callaway Gardens.

We hope you have had a good day and are glad you took your time to read of our experiences.

MAY WE NEVER FORGET

                                                  Stephen Jones

We want to take this time to pause and remember the victims and to grieve with the families and friends of those who lost their lives on 9/11.  We also want to remember all the heroes of that day as well as all who serve this great country both here and abroad.

Lost My Sugar but Still Have My Honey

DSC_2431For the past couple weeks I have been doing the yearly doctor thing, and test results are showing I have onset diabetes. So that is where I get the title “Lost My Sugar”. Seems like I gotta change my eating habits substantially and walk at least 2 mile a day ‘religiously” as the doctor put it. That won’t be as hard as changing the diet because in this lifestyle, we walk a good bit already. With some of the other blood work, the doc said my GFR was 2.5 times higher than what it needs to be and if I can’t get that a good bit lower it could lead to chronic kidney disease. Seems like all that is causing the pancreas to work overtime and instead of the sugars being turned to energy for my system, it’s being turned to triglycerides and fat. So I am now a pill popper hoping to avoid, as the doc put it, full blown diabetes.

Gee, all this because I was feeling tired and a little fuzzy thinking. Well, the second part of my title “Still have My Honey” is Gerri & I are working together to stop this and by doing so we will both be healthier. She is a big support in this and a good encourager.  So, I still have MY Honey!

A Mexican Dinner

                     DSC_3710

Last night Gerri and I went to our favorite Mexican restaurant, San Marcos. We know the owner and they are just a fun group to be around and the food is very good too. Stephen and Jennifer came down and met us for dinner. Stephen wanted to have a birthday dinner with me, so we did. I was glad to be able to share my birthday dinner with our son Stephen and his girl friend Jennifer. After dinner, the owner brought out some fried ice cream and they sung happy birthday to me in Spanish and English. Wonderful surprise, but they should stay in the restaurant business.

Seems like Stephen had a great month of August at work. He ended the month with the highest stats for smartphones, data and accessories. Sure makes for some mighty proud parents.

Well, our campground is full for the extended weekend. Nearby Callaway Gardens hosts an antique car show and a hot air balloon festival each Labor Day weekend. We didn’t make it over there Friday night, but they line the balloons around the beach and as it gets dark, they fire them up and have a ‘balloon glow”. We went a few years ago and it was just so pretty to see them glow at night. On the weekend they let the balloons up and off they go, weather permitting. Well, today was quite windy so they were unable to fly them up. However, they did some tether rides for those that wanted to lift off..about 50 feet.

It was a grand day and great birthday dinner with our son and Jennifer.

Hope all are having a grand Labor Day Weekend.

A Great Birthday

                                    DSC_0515

Yesterday Gerri and I went to Pizza Hut for my birthday.  I had a taste for pizza and we have not been to a Pizza Hut in a good while so I thought it would be a nice change.  We ordered a medium pan pepperoni pizza and boy was it good!  The best part of the pizza dinner was being with my best friend, Gerri.  She is such a special wife, and I am a very fortunate man.  We didn’t get a birthday cake because my doctor wants me to cut way back on sugars; seems I am pre-disposed for diabetes.  Man that stinks, I love eating sweets.

Tonight Stephen and Jennifer are coming down and we are meeting them at our favorite Mexican restaurant.. San Marcos.  And the celebration continues; it’s so great to spend that time with family, we are so blessed.

We   would like to say a special thanks to our new friends and thanks for joining along with us.  We hope each of you have a great Labor Day weekend and be safe.
